Caneel Trailside Cottage Reviews

Description of Caneel Trailside Cottage from St. John Villa Rental -- If you want to relax next to your own private swimming pool adjacent to the Virgin Islands National Park and surrounded by a private tropical garden, then this is the place for you. You will feel entirely away from it all, despite the fact that the galleries, restaurants, bars, music, and other conveniences of Cruz Bay are only one mile away. Caribbean views from every room in the house will mesmerize you as the ridge-top breezes cool you after a day at the beach.

Travel Journal 2011 – by Ray Wagner
This year’s foray into the past lead me to my bookmarks (Nov.2009) where lo and behold I stumbled upon Caneel Trailside Cottage.
It took just a matter of seconds for my mind to shift into travel mode and there I was on a dark, narrow, somewhat of a paved road, shifting the jeep into low gear to make the climb up the mountainside to the cottage driveway.
Being beach bums at heart, we spent little time poolside although we did just that the first day – it was just far too nice to ignore! We decided to recoup from the rigors of a full day traveling air, taxis and ferry.
We made use of the trails just behind the house finding the perfect rock overlook to view St. Thomas just before sunset. Our second trip to the outlook included a bottle of wine, cheese and crackers (we are quick learners).
Our days were spent renewing our intimate relationship with all the island beaches, especially Francis Bay. My sister in law declared ownership of our scuba gear after discovering what was hidden beneath the crystal clear Caribbean waters!
The cottage was most comfortable. My brother in law, a professionally trained gourmet chef, produced a couple outstanding gourmet dinners from the well equipped kitchen. Using fresh local produce and fish, I believe he thought he was back in Paris cooking once again for Julia!
But my most memorable moments occurred in the evenings. Relaxing on the porch overlooking Pillsbury Sound, watching the cruise ships leave St. Thomas. Special friends,,,,,,, cool evening breeze,,,,,, wonderful wine ,,,,,, fragrant cigars,,,,,, Sharing stories of previous vacations. Thanks for the memories!
The only thing missing is a direct connection to Anegada for the lobster bake on the beach!

This was our second stay at Caneel Trailside, the last in November 2009. Found it by luck just checking different sources and following up where I could. It all paid off. This house is perfect for two couples. Two identical, air conditioned master suites w/ baths on either side of the common area which incudes a nice sized kitchen, dining and living areas. The full porch on the south side has a view all the way to St. Croix, 40+ miles away. The house sits high on a hill, only 2 miles up Centerline Road from Cruz Bay. A great, and convenient location for getting to and from Cruz Bay, and everything else at that end of the island. The house is relatively new, and the owner, Martha, seems to take great pride in keeping it up and providing every amenity possible to make your stay as perfect as it can be. Though not what we needed, the house also is set up well for a couple and children, a king bed breaking into two twins. And, if that were not enough, there is a beautiful pool right outside the door that was the perfect way to conclude a day having visited beaches around the island. Every morning we had our breakfast on the veranda, watching the sun come over the mountain top, and preparing our day's activities. It was truly an effort to get up and leave the house for the day. For the adventurous, the Caneel Trail (goes from Cruz Bay to Caneel Bay) is only 100 feet out the back door, and only 1/4 mile up the trail is a most spectacular viewing station which provides a 270 degree view of everything (St. Thomas, British Virgin islands, and west end of St. John), the perfect photo op.
There may be better rental houses on the island, but I have found what we wanted, are secure in knowing what efforts the owner will go to for us to have a perfect stay, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone (as long as their stay does not interfere with my next visit). Enjoy.

Castle St. John Reviews

Description of Castle St. John from St. John Villa Rental -- A secluded hideaway on a windswept mountaintop, bordering the Virgin Islands National Park's Lameshure wilderness, and enjoying the most extraordinary seascape. A sweeping vista of pristine beauty not only vast, but serene. Islanders describe it as among St. John's most astonishing panoramas. True privacy... The Castle is the only property on a private, gated road. Neither neighbor nor tourist can disturb your tranquility.

Thanks for giving us such an amazing place to spend our honeymoon! Weather wasn't picture perfect but it was great for us-cloudy days were awesome for hiking and exploring. We enjoyed cooking here and made great use of the hot tub to recover from long hikes. Most of all we loved having our watches off and relaxing. This has been a special week. We hope to return someday.
Bhatheja, AZ , 03/2010

We had an amazing stay here at the Castle. The view is breathtaking and makes for the perfect place to relax. We loved all the creatures that came to visit us, especially the lizards, hermit crabs and hummingbirds. Some things we enjoyed: Snorkeling at Salt Pond, Trunk Bay and Leinster Bay. Also, call Rick and Robin from "Long Distance" to take you sailing. Thank for creating such a peaceful place to visit. This is a vacation that I will remember forever.

What can I really say about the Castle? It's like living outside with the added benefit of shelter. We love the adorable lizards, hiking, snorkeling and various restaurants but it's the Castle with its unsurpassed views and many charms that really is making this trip unforgettable for us. This place is infused with love and soul and we are grateful. Thank you.
Joan & Art, 02/2010

Our favorite things: Enjoying a mango flavored pale ale or root beer at the Tap Room. Reading a good book while relaxing at Cinnamon Bay. Having a Drink Right, Keep Left at the Tourist Trap. Anything at Shipwreck Landing. Snorkeling at Waterlemon Cay. Sailing to Jost Van Dyke. Swimming with turtles at Salt Pond. AND of course...staying at The Castle on St. John!!! We had such an amazing honeymoon here. Thank you very much, we loved every minute!
Farrell, 02/2010

Bart planned this trip as a surprise and when I saw this Castle for the first time, I felt like a princess! The island and the Castle were beyond our expectations. Looking forward to coming back very soon. This place is a treasure!

The view from Horizons' deck will stay with you forever! Endless views of azure seas ... sparkling, clear water flecked with emerald isles laid out before you like priceless jewels. Frank & Sharon
we enjoyed Horizons for a week in early February. If I were ever to go to St. John and was not able to get to the beaches, spending the week on Horizon's porch would be the next best thing. View is magnificant. The interior is well designed with beautiful wood framing and trim. We shared the house with another couple and accommodations were perfect.

Craig and Debrya
We stayed at the Captain's Cabin for ten days in June 2010. We had an awesome time and it is just extremely charming. The views are great and the place is set up very well. As far as dining out goes, Shipwreck Landing was our favorite. Skinny Legs also has great burgers. If you go to Lily's Gourmet Market in Coral Bay, pay attention as you check out. We were overcharged significantly two out of three times! Luckily we were paying attention and caught it. On the whole, our experience was great. The water was beautiful and overall the people in the area were friendly.

Sue and Dan,
Better late than never! I made the trip to St. John last August with my brother and a friend. It was amazing.
We meet people down there that said they made the trip down there and decided not to leave.
It's easy to understand why-- the scenery is amazing. The beaches are beautiful, the people are friendly as are the goats and chickens that roaming wild all over the island. The old sugar plantation ruins were amazing-- and every place we ate seemed to have a bunch of great locals.
I hope I can make it back before too long.

Kevin & Brenn
My wife and I stayed at Horizons cottage for our honeymoon in June 2009 and I still dream of going back! Sue was extremely accommodating to us and made it easy to just relax and unwind. After staying at Horizons I couldn't have imagined how different our honeymoon would have been if we had stayed at one of the pre-fabricated resorts on the island. Will definitely be back!

Frank and Jeanne
Second Visit -- This was our second stay at Horizon. I love this spot and the house, coming back felt like coming home. Coral Bay is the kind of place you can bring your life back to a reasonable pace - catch up on your reading - sit / snorkel on some great beaches - or get out on the ocean with a charter. If you want away from hustle/bustle, this is it. Friendly people in a friendly place. This house is 'as advertised' and more.

Jim & Sarah
Sue & Dan, We have been on St. John 7 or 8 times now, and our 3-week visit to Captains Cabin was the best yet! The view of the east end to Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Peter Island and Norman Island is fabulous. The accommodations were perfect for the two of us, and as it turned out, with strong northeast winds, the south beaches were the place to be. Having owned rental housing myself, I can appreciate the care that Sue and Dan give to maintaining and improving their properties. We'll be back next year!

Debbie & Sam
My husband & I brought our nephew and his wife to spend the week at Horizon's Cottage 1/31/09-2/07/09. Sam & I have visited St. John before and this was the first trip for John & Sandy. The house is not everything on the website, IT IS SO MUCH MORE. Everything from the layout, to the deck and to the incredible views. Waking up every morning to a beautiful sunrise is just what you need to start off a relaxing day. Horizon's Cottage is very close to some of the most beautiful beaches, Salt Pond Bay and Lameshur. Susan mentions a few local places but The Tourist Trap (Larry from New Hampshire) is a must and visit Lincoln at the bay below. He sells very cold beer and you can take a breathtaking walk in the bay below the house (wear your watershoes). Thank you again Susan for the Horizon's Cottage. I look forward to a future stay. Maybe next time Sam & I will try the Captain's Cabin.

Hummingbird's Seacret Reviews

Description of Hummingbird's Seacret from St. John Villa Rental -- Hummingbird's Seacret is a brand new home in 2007, 2 king bedrooms with a/c and pool, plus sleep sofa, great breezes and views. No smoking home. The expansive deck fronts the full house so all rooms have fabulous views and pool access. This 2 bedroom home in Great Cruz Bay has a 280 degree view ENE to SSE overlooking Great Cruz and Chocolate Hole, with views to the northern outer cays.

Joe and Mary, February 2012
This is our 40th winter St. John visit, the 16th booking with the incomparable Lisa, but our 1st at Hummingbird's Seacret. It’s a lovely house, and, like all of Lisa’s, immaculate and well-appointed. Close to town, good neighborhood, but extremely private. The layout is fine for one couple, but would offer privacy for two, as the bedrooms are on opposite ends of the living space. Breezes keep it cool in the afternoon, and it faces north-east so the inside hardly ever gets full sun; this would be especially important in warmer months. Deck & pool mostly shaded for the sun-wary. We rarely used the air conditioning. Outside the back door is a tree with large, fuzzy pink blooms which attract hummingbirds, often more than a dozen at a time in the morning. (1 flight of steps down from parking to house - no wheelchairs.) Like the hummingbirds, we hope to come back.

Tony and Ellen, April 22 - 29, 2011
We couldn't have been more pleased with the property or the service at Hummingbird's Seacret and Lisa. Absolutely everything we needed was provided and then some. We are already planning our return to St. John and Hummingbird's Seacret.
Thank you Lisa!

Mr. and Mrs. A., Sept 2010
Thank you, thank you thank you for the beautiful Hummingbird's Seacret...what an amazing place to re-group after 9 months of wedding planning, we loved Hummingbird's Seacret and St John!

Nancy and Ed, Sept 2010
This is our 6th trip to St john and first at Hummingbird's Seacret - this is an absolutely beautiful home and Hummingbird's Seacret will be added to our cherished St John Memories - we hope to see you soon!

Lorraine and Bob, Sept 2010
Our week here has been one of the most wonderful, relaxing vacations we've ever had. Hummingbird's Seacret felt like our home away from home. We enjoyed swimming and snorkeling your pristine beaches and roaming the beautiful island. A fantastic way to celebrate our 49th anniversary with two of our closest friends! Thanks.

Kamabesu Villa, Club House & Property will comfortably sleep up to 10 guests but is also cozy as a 2-4 person rental. Kamabesu Villa's main house, 40 feet above the pool, has an expansive outdoor dining area attached to the living room, kitchen, two bedrooms and full baths and is centrally air conditioned. The Club House, a new addition to the property, houses 2 more air-conditioned bedrooms, baths, laundry and kitchenette. The villa has central air conditioning throughout and a generator for those infrequent times that there is a power outage.

Ike E -- Stayed Jan 2012
My friends and I had an absolutely fantastic stay at Kamabesu. Katie was incredibly communicative from the get-go, going above and beyond to provide us all the information we needed for the stay. She even had us picked up from the ferry downtown! The villa is just wonderful, clean, bright, airy, amazing views, great location, and completely stocked with all the amenities you could ask for. Same goes for the Club House. There were definitely countless hours spent soaking up the sun in the pool, when we weren't off exploring St John of course. Both Katie and Bryan were beyond accommodating to all our needs, and they really did give us absolute privacy while we were there. I certainly would not hesitate to stay at Kamabesu again. Thanks Katie!

Michael R. -- Loved it! -- July 2011
Just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed staying at Kamabesu. The villa had everything we needed. The bedrooms were very spacious and the beds were oh so comfortable! The view of Fish Bay from the massive screened in porch was beautiful and the pool and pool area was perfect (and safe) for the kids. We also felt that the location was perfect for us…away from the hustle of Cruz Bay but easily accessible.

Aug 14, 2011
We spent a week at Kamabesu with our boys (5 and 8). This was our second stay at Kamabesu and it was just as wonderful as our first. The Tartas are welcoming hosts. They are on-site (first floor), but you would never know that they are there, unless if you need something. The villa is well maintained with beautiful views and our boys particularly enjoyed swimming in the pool. We plan on going back again.

Kamabesu Villa exceeded our expectations! Great tradewinds, beautiful view, and friendly caretakers that went above and beyond for us! We would definitely book this villa again and would recommend it to others!
Nikki (Lee's Summit, MO) -- April 2010

We had an incredible vacation at Kamabesu! The villa was as comfortable as my home, yet as relaxing as a hotel! We were able to enjoy nights on the town with local cuisine, and other nights going to the local market to return back to the villa for grilling and chilling poolside. The caretakers were wonderful! They were as pleasant and helpful as could be by always suggesting day trips and activities to do. We look forward to going back!!

MoonSwept Reviews

Description of MoonSwept from St. John Villa Rental -- "One of the top 5 new villas in the Caribbean for 2008" by Caribbean Way Canada Magazine. MoonSwept Villa is nestled on one of the peaks of Calabash Boom in Coral Bay. With an elevation of 800+ feet, MoonSwept Villa boasts a 200 degree view from North to South and is audience to beautiful Sunrises and spectacular Moonrises as well.

Guest Review from SBridges - Mar 12, 2012 -- "Pure peace and privacy"
The villa was absolutely fantastic. Clean as a whistle and there was nothing the place didn't have from the cable and flatscreens, pool, patio and hot tub. Even the covered cabana for breakfast or to take an hour out of the sun and relax in those lounge chairs. The kitchen was stocked with everything you would have at home. The caretaker was available when needed to point us to the beaches and attractions (definitely make the walk to Rams Head). The privacy the location and landscaping offered were great. The location of the villa in Coral Bay gave us good access to many beaches, Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay, Francis Bay all offered great beaches but by far my favorite was Salt Pond beach. There were several restaurants right in Coral Bay but by far the nice thing was the availability of the grill on the patio to cook a few things at home without going every night! Top notch!

Guest Review from gina.b - Mar 1, 2012 -- "Speechless!! What a View! Total comfort..."
From the first moment you open the front door - the view completely consumes you. It is sooo worth the tad scary drive up the hill :-D. The house is so comfortable and lacks absolutely nothing to assure you have a fabulous trip! Beach chairs, coolers, plenty of towels, a wonderfully outfitted kitchen, etc etc. The pool w/ it's spectacular view - thanks to the clear glass panels make it truly difficult to want to wander the island. We went to the beaches one day - and then decided we were enjoying relaxing by the pool at the house more. You cannot find a better view. We brought food and cooked dinner every night - the gas grill is brand new! I could go on and on...suffice it to say that I've had the opportunity to rent 5 different houses on St John in the past few years - I'll be back to rent this one again as soon as I can find time to get away!

Guest Review from r.warford - Jan 30, 2012 -- "Simply beautiful, spectacular and relaxing."
Everything about Moonswept will take your breath away and you will be guaranteed to leave feeling rested and relaxed. If you happen to be there during full moon you are in for an extra treat. Our group did exploring every day but one could easily not leave for a day[s] and be totally happy just enjoying the pool, the view, the hot tub, fully stocked kitchen and great grill etc. plus all those electronic gizmos we have at home.[WiFi, ipod and DVD etc.-hint- you may want to try a day or two without it]. Great host Dave will greet you at the dock and help you with just about anything you can think of. He's a great asset to a wonderful property. Best beaches although you can't go wrong anyplace-Salt Pond, Little Lameshur, and Francis Bay. Best local restaurants-Aqua Bistro and Miss Lucy's. Enjoy!!

Guest Review from e.moline - Jan 26, 2012 -- "Swept away!"
Second stay at Moonswept. What a wonderful villa. Kitchen is well stocked. New towels in bath and for beach. New cushions for patio furniture. New hot tub! Great improvements made our stay even more enjoyable. The pool can be a little cool but comfortable enough. The view is outstanding! We enjoyed a magical day of watching ominous weather roll in from the East over mountains and Drake Channel and Hurricane Hole. Beware...villa gravity kicks in quickly!

Guest Review from LyndaWB- Jan 9, 2012 -- "Being at MoonSwept Villa in St. John was even more than we hoped"
MoonSwept Villa is extraordinary in every way, the view exquisite and everything we could possibly have needed was provided. We stayed for two weeks and loved every moment of being there. The location is on the "quieter" side of the island, which we loved. The kitchen is very well appointed with everything needed to eat in, which we often did. However, there are a number of restaurants nearby. We loved our stay at MoonSwept Villa and will return again!

Mystic Ridge Reviews

Description of Mystic Ridge from St. John Villa Rental -- Mystic Ridge was designed and built with quality lifestyle and love of beauty in mind. Perched high on a mountain ridge on its own private expanse of land surrounded by National Park, this luxurious home offers dramatic and spectacular "down-island" views of the Drake Channel, the British Virgin Islands, St. John's East End, Coral Bay and the National Park mountainsides. Since Mystic Ridge is located in the center of our small island, Cruz Bay (15 min), Coral Bay (10 min.), and North Shore Beaches (5 min.) are only brief drives away.

David -- 1/25/10
Comfort in Paradise For our fourth visit to St John we stayed at Mystic Ridge and were very pleased. While the views are not quite as good as some villas we have stayed in, the other features far outweighed that. The first thing I noticed was the ease of access to Mystic Ridge. Most villas in St John seem to have very challenging driveways but this one is a straight shot off of Center Line Rd with an abundance of parking. The proximity to the road does allow for some traffic noise but it is minimal. The house is well laid out with a lot of privacy for each bedroom. It is well supplied, very nicely furnished and has a good supply of snorkeling gear. Its best feature is the ease of access to the North Shore beaches and the Coral Bay bars and restaurants. We much prefer that side of the island and Mystic Ridge was reasonably close. All bedrooms but one had A/C but, as we were there January, we relied on the abundant breezes. Being high on the hillside, it probably has those breezes year round. As can be seen from the web site, Mystic Ridge is a lovely house and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to our return.
